A rock-climbing tourist was left stunned when a monk walked past him on a steep slope with no shoes and equipment.
Vung Lomlalaiy was visiting the Ban Keun Temple in the capital city of Vientiane in Laos where he had to climb up through a rope.
Mobile phone footage uploaded on TikTok shows Vung making his way to the top of the mountain where the temple is located.
As he stops mid-way for a short break, a young monk is seen casually walking up the slope while carrying two bags.
The Buddhist monk wears a long yellow robe and no shoes as he treks up the rocky mountain.
Vung pans the camera to himself and shows the long rope that he is clinging onto while watching the “gravity-defying” monk reach to the top.
The video has amassed more than 3.2 million views and was shared to TikTok where thousands of viewers commented.
Some said walking on barefoot gives more grip than walking with shoes on, while others likened the monk to some fictional characters in cartoons.
One viewer wrote: “He’s on bare feet, that gives a lot of extra grip. The problem is that for most people that would hurt like hell…”
Another one added: “He’s also walking at an angle to mitigate the grade of the incline.”
Some experienced hikers said the monk was walking on a switchback approach – a zigzag walking pattern to reach to the top with much less effort.
One anime fan joked: “He must be the air bender from Avatar!”
“Monks have extraordinary powers,” a fourth implied. “Vertical climbing may be one of them.”
