A video of a worm re-growing its entire body after being chopped up has sent the internet into a flurry.

Efra Rivera-Serrano only uploaded the bizarre video to Twitter yesterday afternoon but has already seen 125,000 flooding in to view it.

The video begins with a flatworm being chopped into small segments with a large, sharp knife.

Despite being separated from the rest of its current body, the detached segments carry on moving.

The video then focuses on an individual piece of the wriggling and contracting creature.

A camera was left focusing on a segment of the worm’s body overnight.

The ‘zombie’ worm grew its entire body back after being sliced up

Staggeringly, as hours passed by, the creature’s body grew back in parts.

After three days, the worm’s body had entirely grown back to its original state.

Some 12 days later, the other chopped wound began excreting faeces after becoming the worm’s rear-end.

Within three weeks, the other pieces, as well as the head, will each have grown into a complete flatworm, identical to the one originally sliced up.

They all appear dark brown and about a half-inch long.

The experiment was carried out by Nelson Hall, a doctoral student of bioengineering at Stanford University.

Efra said: “I was just reading a pub on planarians.

“One thing led to another so now I must share this 1-min video of how these flatworms can grow a whole body from a fragment after being chopped.”

One person said: “I’m disturbed, amazed and impressed all at once.”

A second seemingly quipped: “I hope, for their sake, they don’t have a concept of identity or they’d be screwed by a whole lot of philosophical dilemmas.”

Another called the worm a zombie.

“Repulsing and ultimately fascinating.

“I think I’ll have vivid nightmares tonight,” they added.

It comes after a ” zombie” chicken “came back to life ” on a dinner table, leaving a diner screaming in horror.
