Jimmy Carter’s presidency, which lasted from 1977 to 1981, was not without controversy. Critics point to the Iran hostage crisis, alleged financial irregularities and his pardoning of Vietnam draft dodgers as missteps from the peanut farmer president.
But the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been the target of an accusation that was never directed at his successors Reagan, Obama Trump, or either of the Bushes.
Some people believe he was a clone, or an even more exotic biological duplicate called an organic robotoid.
Conspiracy theory website Merlin TM puts it like this: “The Jimmy Carter who came to Portland a few years ago was not the Jimmy Carter that had run for President.
“On Easter, 1979 the first robot model of Jimmy Carter replaced the man Jimmy Carter.”
According to the site, secret societies such as the Illuminati seek out naturally-occurring doubles of prominent people to use as decoys.
This really did happen at least once, when actor ME Clifton James was recruited to impersonate celebrated World War 2 commander General (later Field Marshal) Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.
The Montgomery deception, a disinformation campaign designed to confuse the German high command about the Allies’ plans to invade France in 1944, was code-named Operation Copperhead.
Similar campaigns are said to have been run by Adolf Hitler who had a lookalike called Gustav Weler, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin who seems to have had a few stand-ins, and various other notables such as Boris Yeltsin and Saddam Hussein.
All of those decoys were employed to protect the individual being imitated.
A CIA plan to find a double for Indonesian president Sukarno was different.
The US intelligence agency recruited a Sokarno stand-in in order to create a pornographic film designed to ruin the increasingly left-wing leader’s reputation, in a rare example of a lookalike employed to do harm to the subject.
But all of these lookalikes were real, naturally-born people with perhaps a few minor surgical alterations to help them pass as another person.
According to the Jimmy Carter theory, the Georgia-born POTUS was duplicated, perhaps up to 100 times, by a biological machine with a computerised brain based on hologram technology.
These synthetic people are allegedly created from animal tissue harvested during cattle mutilation phenomena.
Author Fritz Springmeier claimed that Ben Bova’s science fiction novel The Multiple Man, in which fictional US President James Halliday is replaced by a clone, was in its essentials true.
Springmeier goes into great detail on how human memories are duplicated and transferred into one of these “organic robotoids”.
He also claimed to have seen a duplicate Bill Clinton out jogging with no security staff nearby.
Eccentric political commentator Peter David Beter, in one of his cassette-based “podcasts”, covered the supposed menace, which he said was a Russian conspiracy to undermine the US by replacing key personnel with organic robots.
He said in October 1979: “Five months ago I reported that Russia had begun deploying an astonishing new Intelligence weapon. These are the ‘organic robotoids’ — artificial robot-like living creatures that simulate human beings.”
He said that these robotoids had replaced several important US government figures, explaining they were part of a mind control program, saying: “the strange behaviour of the secretly robotized Carter Administration is destroying confidence.
“NATO leaders are beginning to say: If Carter can’t get a SALT II treaty, what good can he do? This move may be the cleverest manoeuvre yet by Russia.”
He went on to outline a secret war between communists in the Soviet Union, using their robotoids, vying to control the world population.
The technology that Beter, and the numerous conspiracy theorists that have followed him, describes appears to be well in advance of what medical science can achieve now – let alone in the mid-Seventies.
But the story of Monty’s Double was only published 10 years after the operation it described and several other major military operations have remained secret for decades. Who knows if there’s some truth in the tall tale of Jimmy Carter’s twin?
