The Bahrain Grand Prix had to be red-flagged on the first lap after Romain Grosjean’s Haas burst into huge flames in worrying-looking scenes. Sky Sports cameras thankfully soon showed a healthy Grosjean in conversation with medics in the medical car but the French driver – who suffered minor burns – was fortunate to survive the horrific incident.

Sky Sports said that reports yet to be confirmed indicate Grosjean may have suffered a suspected broken rib in addition to his burns.

But the 34-year-old luckily walked away largely unscathed given the grave consequences that could have come of the 140mph crash.

The halo in the Haas car fortunately parted the barriers and saved Grosjean’s crash helmet from taking the brute force of the impact.

Race replays showed Grosjean attempting to moving across AlphaTauri’s Daniil Kvyat on track and then after contact, crashing head-on into the barriers just after turn three.

The force of the car completely split the chassis in half with either the fuel tank or the fuel collector being punctured and prompting a huge fireball.

Grosjean was helped out of the flaming wreckage by a medical delegate, who was excellent to react quickly alongside the medical car driver who doused the Haas racer with a fire extinguisher.

The crew of the Safety Car – which follows the cars for the first few corners of the first lap – and the marshals were pivotal in ensuring that the inferno did not cause a loss of life.

Sky Sports F1 expert Martin Brundle reacted: “That’s a miracle. It pierced the barriers like a can opener.

“They’re constantly trying to improve the structural stability of the chassis and that’s just saved his life. That is extraordinary.”

Haas tweeted: “That was scary. We’ve heard over the radio that Romain is out of the car and ok.”

They then added: “Romain is in the medical car and will be taken for assessment.”

A third tweet read: “UPDATE: Romain has some minor burns on his hands and ankles but otherwise he is ok. He is with the doctors just now.”

Members of the Haas garage could be seen in tears with drivers and mechanics across the grid understandably shaken by such shocking pictures.

All the drivers returned to the pits while race stewards cleared away the Haas car and repaired the heavily damaged barriers.

Soon after it was confirmed there would be a minimum 45-minute delay until the race restarts.

In the meantime, Grosjean has been taken to hospital as a precaution and for further medical evaluation.

Haas boss Guenther Steiner told Sky Sports F1: “The latest I’ve got, he’s doing OK. He had light burns on his hands and his ankles.

“Obviously he’s shaken and he’s going through all the checks. He’s conscious and he’s fine. He seems to be OK.

“I want to thank the rescue crews, they were there very quick – the marshals and the FIA people they did a great job.

“It was scary. When you see what’s going on, the barrier, it’s unbelievable. We were lucky by being unlucky. I would rather have that luck than race luck.

“He seems to be doing good, we got away with it I think. It looked like he was just moving across with the front wheel and went full speed into the barrier.

“I’ve just seen the footage you’ve seen, not any more. As long as he’s good, that’s the most important thing.”

World champion Lewis Hamilton said on social media from the pitlane while the race was suspended: “I’m so grateful Romain is safe.

“Wow… the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do.

“Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we’ve taken for Romain to walk away from that safely.”

Alan van der Merwe, the driver of the FIA’s medical car, said: “Big surprise for us, we’ve never seen that much fire. In 12 years I’ve not seen much fire and an impact like that.

“We took a while to process and then Romain got out of the car himself, which is pretty amazing after an accident like that. There was relief when we got back here.

“It just goes to show, all the systems we have worked to develop, everything worked hand-in-hand: the halo, the barriers, the seat-belt. Everything worked.

“Without just one of those things working, it could have been a very different outcome.”

Haas team chief Steiner then came over to greet him and said: “Thank you so much. Honestly I was surprised how you f***ing reacted.”
