Chelsea are NOT ready to win the Premier League, insists Paul Scholes after Wolves defeat – as he highlights a ‘lack of creativity’ as a major weakness and says Mason Mount and Kai Havertz need another YEAR to develop into ‘sensational players’

  • Chelsea missed out on their chance to go top after a late defeat to Wolves
  • Goals from Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto helped Wolves come from behind
  • Despite a tight league, Paul Scholes feels it’s too early for this Chelsea team
  • He said he still fancies the title race to be between Liverpool and Man City

Paul Scholes has claimed that Chelsea are still one year away from challenging for the Premier League title as players like Mason Mount and Kai Havertz still need time to develop.

Frank Lampard‘s side fell to their second successive Premier League defeat with a stoppage time 2-1 defeat to Wolves thanks to a late Pedro Neto goal.

Chelsea have showed signs of improvements since last season but Scholes feels they still have a lack of creativity in the squad.

The title races promises to be one of the closest and most exciting in years, with just five points separating the top ten so far, with Chelsea sitting in fifth place.

But the former Manchester United man feels Liverpool and Manchester City will still be out of Chelsea’s reach.

He said: ‘I just think there’s a little bit a lack of creativity on the pitch. (N’Golo) Kante does what he does brilliantly well and he’s got two young players next to him in Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.

‘Who I think will be sensational players, but that’s why I don’t think they’ll win the league this year. It’s a bit early for them they’ll be up there, close to Manchester City and Liverpool I just don’t think they are that ready.

‘But in a year’s time with a bit of experience, know-how bit more quality they’ll be up there challenging.’

Chelsea would have gone level on points with Tottenham and Liverpool at the top of the table if they had held on after Olivier Giroud’s opening goal.

But goals from Daniel Podence and Neto mean they stay in fifth place and should Tottenham or Liverpool win in their clash on Wednesday, that would mean Chelsea would be six points off the top of the table.

Scholes added it will take time for Chelsea’s young stars to fulfill their potential but he has high hopes, especially for Mason Mount.

He said: ‘I think Frank’s doing a brilliant job with the team got an identity everyone knows way they play and whats expected of them.

‘I think the problem he’s got is creativity looking at the last two games, Everton they hardly created a chance.

‘I think they’ve got the players, they’re young players and will take time. Mason Mount could be a Frank Lampard he’s got the ability to win games for Chelsea. In years to come he will score lots of goals like Frank.’
