The mythical city of Atlantis has long been shrouded in mystery, with debates raging over various theories on its existence.
But could this be proof it was once a thriving metropolis?
Navy crews in Portugal were summoned after a “sunken Atlantis pyramid” was discovered off the Portuguese Azores islands.
The discovery was accidentally made by a local sailor who was looking for good fishing grounds. He used digital scanning devices to help him locate the hidden pyramid.
It was found in an area of the Atlantic Ocean that has been covered by water for around 20,000 years, coinciding with the last great ice age of the northern hemisphere where the glaciers started melting 2,000 years earlier.
Experts reckon whoever was living there before the ice age was probably responsible for building the pyramid.
It was discovered by Diocleciano Silva between the islands of Terceira and São Miguel, the biggest island on the archipelago, and it is said that the structure is perfectly square.
The discovery is thought to be around 60m high with a base of nearly 8,000 square metres.
Mr Silva said he decided to come forward with his discovery so the mystery could be unravelled.
He added: “Many situations that did not give knowledge and later other people have.
“Then I think it should be revealed and I decided to do it.”
Archaeologists from the Portuguese Association of Archaeological Research have found evidence that suggests humans did live in the Azores many thousands of years before the Portuguese discovered the group of islands in 1427.
This supports the idea that an ancient civilisation may have been there at the time to build the huge pyramid which is now underwater.
In Greek mythology the island of Atlantis sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after falling out of favour with the gods.
It was first mentioned by the famous philosopher Plato more than 2,300 years ago and is often referred to as the “lost city of Atlantis”.
Debates over the Atlantis mystery have raged for centuries. In November 2018, researchers claimed to have found the mythical city off the coast of Spain.
Just months later, Daily Star Online reported how a biblical researcher claimed Atlantis’ remains can be found in Israel.
One of the most outlandish claims emerged in September 2018. A historian revealed to Daily Star Online how Atlantis could have been hiding off the coast of Ireland all along.
