Police were called by a member of the public who reported seeing the red bus careering along a main road at 1.30am today – hours after most bus services had finished for the night.

Merseyside Police found the vehicle 15 minutes later parked somewhat haphazardly on the forecourt of an Esso garage and conveniently near West Derby’s Jolly Miller pub.

The bus was later found to be damaged at the back end.

A 24-year-old man, from Walton, Liverpool, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, drug driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and damaging a vehicle.

He was remanded in custody and was expected to be questioned on Tuesday.
