A man has been filmed teasing and trying to wind up a lion after climbing into its zoo enclosure.

The man somehow managed to evade security and then was filmed lying next to the huge predator.

In a video of the incident, he is seen trying to egg it on to attack him at the New Delhi Zoo, in India, but the lion kept its cool.

Eyewitnesses said the man, identified as Rehan Khan, 28, looked drunk and may also have been suffering from mental health problems.

The man was filmed lying by the lion

He was able to get past guards and jump over the enclosure fencing before approaching the lion.

He then sat face-to-face with the big cat before lying down nearby.

The wild animal refused to rise to the bait although it did slash at him at one point, during the bizarre incident on Thursday.

Lion remained calm despite being provoked

The man was rescued by zoo staff after they tranquilized the lion and he amazingly escaped unharmed.

Anish Andheria, of the Wildlife Conservation Trust, said how lucky the man had been.

He said: “A lion of this size can kill a human being within 15 seconds.”

Zoo staff rescued the man by tranquilizing the lion

A man was mauled to death by a white tiger at the New Delhi Zoo, in 2014, after entering the animal’s enclosure.

Zoo authorities have reportedly been criticised repeatedly for a lack of security around the big cat pens.
