CAUTION: 3 Signs That You Should NOT Drive More Traffic to Your Website

Increasing your website’s traffic is great — in fact, it’s vital if you want to own a successful business — but it’s also not the end goal. Because even if you drive more traffic to your website, but you don’t see a boost in lead-generation, conversions, and sales, then that traffic might as well not exist at all.

Even worse… website traffic isn’t cheap.

So before you waste your time or money on website visitors, here are 3 signs that your website isn’t prepared to convert those visitors (and how to fix that).

1. Your Website Has a Low Conversion Rate

Before you attempt to drive more traffic, you should have an idea of how well your website converts existing traffic. If you’re already getting consistent visitors to a landing page, for instance, but you’re receiving a sub-par conversion rate, then more traffic isn’t the solution… a better conversion rate is.

So… do you have a product or service to offer that can provide you with a healthy ROI on the traffic you’re going to pay for?

If not, then you might want to hold off until you have a product to sell. 1. Facebook Ads

You can’t write an article about driving traffic to your website without mentioning Facebook ads. Over 6 million businesses use Facebook ads to reach their target market, and for good reason — according to Pew Research Center, 68% of adults in the U.S. are Facebook users, which stacks up impressively against other social media platforms.

In other words, you are on Facebook and your audience is probably on Facebook, too.

The primary drawbacks of using Facebook ads to drive traffic to your website are…

  1. The Targeting is a Little Complicated — If you’ve never used Facebook ads before and you’re not familiar with their advertising platform and navigation, then yikes. It can be a little bit overwhelming when you’re just getting started. Here’s a helpful guide for figuring out your targeting (probably the most difficult part of Facebook ads). 
  2. The Leads are Sub-Par Quality — If you want to use Facebook ads only to collect leads, maybe reconsider. Unfortunately, the lead quality from Facebook ads is usually pretty iffy since it’s a disruptive  form of marketing and people didn’t come to you by looking for you themselves.
  3. You Need to Sell Something — Our recommendation is, if you choose to use Facebook ads, then have something to sell. Ideally, sell a product that will provide you with a healthy ROI after the cost of the ads, which stacks up surprisingly fast. If you have an effective sales funnel with a $40 or $50 product, then you’ll probably be able to run Facebook ads that are profitable for your business.

2. Google Ads

There are currently about 7 billion people on the planet. Shockingly, Google hosts 4.4 billion queries every single day — and that number is growing by about 10% every year.

If we believe that your target market is on Facebook — which has 6 million users — then your target market is definitely using Google.

The biggest trick to using Google ads is to figure out what your audience searches for already and then to bid for those target keyword phrases. You can use paid tools like Ahrefs or Buzzsumo to do keyword research, or you can use Ubersuggest for free.

But a word of advice. While about 80% of Google searchers click on organic results instead of ads, that’s not the case when people are ready to buy — in fact, Google ads receive a whopping 65% of clicks when the search phrase starts with intent-to-buy keywords, while organic results get 35%. In other words, your Google ad budget is best spent on keyword phrases where people are itching to buy, not keywords that indicate people are just exploring or doing research.

3. Price Comparison Engines

A price comparison engine is a website or app that lists and compares products from various online participating stores. The benefit for consumers is that they can find the best price for whatever product they’re looking for. The benefit for ecommerce sellers is that they get more eyes on their products. 

But these price comparison engines only show the products of participating sites — meaning, you have to go add your products to their database. To be clear, the price comparison engine doesn’t actually sell your product, only lists the items and allows people to click-through and purchase from you.

For ecommerce stores especially, this can be a helpful way to drive consistent traffic to product pages and maybe even get some additional conversions. Some of the most popular price comparison engines are…

  1. BizRate
  2. PriceGrabber
  3. Google Shopping
  4. Shopping.com
  5. CamelCamelCamel
  6. Shopzilla

For SaaS or B2B products, you might consider getting your website and/or products mentioned and reviewed on relevant third-party listing websites. These sites will sometimes require an affiliate commissions relationship, but not all of them. Just search for “best [product/service]” in Google and insert the type of product you sell…

4. Organic SEO/Blogging

SEO is one of the best ways to drive long-term traffic to your website. I say “long-term” because, while SEO is crazy effective, it also takes quite a bit of time to build authority and rankings on a new site. I also say “long-term” because once you have some solid rankings, those keywords will drive consistent traffic to your website for a long time into the future. In other words, it’s hard to build your SEO… but it’s also hard to lose your SEO.

The formula for building your website’s SEO is really quite simple…

  1. Create the best content for relevant keywords that you want to rank for. Look through what’s currently on Page 1 for your given keyword phrase and then try to create a more thorough blog post on the topic.
  2. Guest blog consistently on other similar websites to build backlinks. Ahrefs has a great article that will help you do that.

The final factor is time — in fact, that’s probably the biggest SEO factor. So write content for the most competitive keywords first and then move on to less competitive phrases. The longer a piece of content exists, the more likely it is to rank on Page 1, and that’s especially true for highly competitive keyword phrases (the average age of a Page 1 result is between 650 and 950 days).

5. Podcasting, YouTube, & Guest Blogging

6. Collaborate With Influencers

You can collaborate with other industry experts or “influencers” in a lot of different ways. Perhaps the most common (or at least most popularized) way is when businesses pay influencers cold, hard cash for sharing their product or service with an audience.

And maybe that strategy will work for you.

Or maybe it won’t — it could be too expensive and/or too hit-or-miss. After all, it can be difficult to form a mutually beneficial relationship with influencers — they probably won’t do a very good job of driving traffic to your website if they don’t really believe in your product or service in the first place.

Here are a few less popular but equally effective ways to collaborate with experts or influencers in your industry and drive traffic to your website…

  • Mention-For-a-Mention — If you don’t have the budget to pay influencers a ton of money, offer to mention them to your own email list if they’ll mention your business to their email list. You can even create a free discount code or gift to really entice the influencer’s audience to check out your website and to make the mention feel a little more natural.
  • Affiliate Commissions — Why not just offer the influencer 30% or 50% of the money they bring your way? This might end up being more expensive than if you’d just paid a flat-fee for the mention, but at least you’re only paying for results.
  • Obvious Bribery — A friend of mine with some influence in the real estate niche once told me that he received a bag of money (literally) with a note asking him to try out a business’s product and, if he liked it, to share a review of the product with his audience. I mean, the bag was full of $1 bills that probably added up to about $100 total, but still, a difficult gesture to ignore.

7. Forum Engagement

This strategy isn’t for the light-hearted who have big budgets and want to drive lots website traffic right away. But engaging in industry-relevant forums consistently can build your personal authority and even drive traffic to your website so long as you have a link in your bio.

You won’t drive a ton of traffic this way (unless one of your responses really gets a lot of attention), but the people who do visit your website will be high-quality and will genuinely be interested in what your website offers. 

Try creating a schedule for engaging in forums. Even 10 minutes per day answering questions and responding to threads can start building your authority and driving a bit of traffic to your website.

In today’s world of artificial intelligence, done-for-you services, and automation, “manual” is a dirty word. But there’s no denying the impact and affordability of hard work.
