The terrifying pictures taken in the cellar of a former slaughterhouse – the same spot where a monk is said to have been burned alive – were captured by chance after a creepy ghost hunt.
Tania Copeman, 41, was exploring The Village in Mansfield, Notts, with Ghost Hunts UK last month when she felt “compelled” to take two pictures before she left.
Tania and her husband Jared, 47, were shocked when one photo showed an “evil-looking” pale face peering out of the gloom, with glowing white eyes – despite no one having been there.
Ghost hunter Lee Roberts, who had taken them on the tour that evening, reckons the “creepy” face could be one of the seven monks who burned to death there in the 1500s.
Tania said: “I didn’t really expect to capture anything really.
“But I’d always wanted to go to The Village.
“I’d heard about that place for a long time and always wanted to go.
“Jared and I had gone into that section, which we later found out is exactly where they think the priests were burned alive.
“After we’d done some investigating in that room but hadn’t found anything, I just had the inkling to take two more pictures.

“I even said to Jared when we left ‘let me take two more’ – and that’s when that appeared.
“But I didn’t notice the figure until later when I was looking through my photographs.
“I saw the two eyes but at the time I didn’t realise they were eyes – I thought they were just two white dots.
“But then I zoomed in on the picture and I saw this face and I was like ‘oh my god’.
“I shouted Jared and he said straight away that it was a face.”
“I didn’t notice the figure until later when I was looking through my photographs”
Lee says he has tried to recreate the photo and checked the area to ensure there is nothing there that could have made up the shape of a face and is now convinced it is paranormal.
The 42-year-old runs Haunted Events UK and also takes groups of ghost hunters on tours of The Village, which was a malthouse and pub after being a slaughterhouse and is a grade-II listed building.

After Tania and Jared showed ghost hunter Lee what they had captured, he checked the CCTV to rule out that anyone else had been in that room with them when the photo was taken.
When CCTV confirmed the duo were indeed supposed to be alone in the room, they admitted it was “really creepy”.
Tania, a cleaner, said: “I was excited to capture something. But then the doubt springs into your mind – could it be a reflection of something? You constantly think, what if it’s not something paranormal?
“But now that everything has been checked. We’ve confirmed no one else was there, there was nothing there to reflect off – so now it is a wow, what have a caught?
“The face does look burnt. So it makes me think I might have caught one of the priests that was burnt there. I don’t know.
“It makes you think – what is it? Who is it? It makes me want to go back there and do some more investigating.
“It’s certainly not put me off at all.”
Lee said: “[Tania and Jared] were both frightened and excited by what they captured.
“You could tell they had been on ghost hunts before so they were excited.
“But at the same time they were also wary about going back down there because of the nature of what it looks like.
“Whether it is a nasty entity or something that it quite nice, because it looks quite evil-looking, it automatically puts that into people’s minds.
“I am quite scientific-minded so the first thing I had to rule out was that it was not something there causing it or pareidolia – and it wasn’t.
“I’m wary of saying things are paranormal but we cannot explain this so therefore this is paranormal. There was nothing there to explain.
“It looks quite evil and demonic. But that’s not to say that it is. That could be just the first form of manifestation and that’s the way it’s been caught in the picture.”
Even stranger, Tania claims she felt a burning sensation on her face in the same area – before Lee had even told them that monks had been burned alive there.
Tania said: “What was really weird is that while we were in there I could feel the side of my face getting hot so I moved away.
“As I turned my head, then the front of my face started getting hot. Then Lee mentioned about the priests getting burned down there and I thought that was a bit freaky.
“I think there could be a link between the burning sensation on my face and what I caught in the photo.
“It does make me think somebody or something was trying to get my attention – and it worked.
“This is a lot clearer than anything we have ever caught before. It is a lot more defined – you can see the ears, nose, and the whole face features.
“It is strange [the way the eyes glow] as it looks like they are reflecting the flash of the camera. That’s what drew me to the picture in the first place.”
