Conor McGregor CONFIRMS rematch after Khabib ‘FRIENDS’ jump in cage, PUNCH him from behind | UFC | Sport

Khabib won the lightweight fight by submission in the fourth round to consign McGregor to his second UFC defeat.

But the win was totally overshadowed by the sickening moments that followed afterwards – when Khabib stormed out of the octagon and his associates crashed in.

Khabib himself leapt out to attack Bellator fighter Dillon Danis, one of McGregor’s closest allies in the camp, who trains jujitsu with him. Danis was then escorted out of the arena by police.

After , McGregor ran over to where the Russian’s camp were.

McGregor himself tried to jump out the octagon but he was pulled back by a member of security. It’s then where McGregor appears to strike out and punch one of Khabib’s team.

It is at that moment when Khabib’s team-mates Zubaira Tukhugov and Islam Makhachev jumped into the octagon and went for McGregor.

UFC president Dana White refused to hand over the belt to Russian Khabib and later revealed three men had been arrested.

The president said: “Three of his [Khabib’s] guys have been arrested and taken to jail. The three guys that were involved in the incident, I believe it was those three, have been arrested and taken to jail right now.”

Before the night was out, however, all three men were released after McGregor declined to press charges.

McGregor has appeared to confirm that a rematch is now on the cards with a post from his official Twitter account on Sunday.

He wrote: “Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.”

After a lengthy delay in the early hours of Sunday morning, Nurmagomedov eventually addressed a media conference at the T-Mobile Arena.

“First of all I want to say sorry to athletic commission Nevada, to Vegas, I know this is not my best side. This is not my best side,” he said.

He went on to complain bitterly about McGregor’s behavior in the lead-up to the fight that exacerbated the bad blood between the two teams.

“He talk about my religion, he talk about my country, he talk about my father, he come to Brooklyn and he broke bus, he almost killed a couple people – what about this?” he asked reporters.

Stunned Joe Rogan – the respected UFC pundit – believes it was all sparked by something Danis said and an illegal McGregor move in the fight.

“Khabib was angry because Conor was grabbing Khabib’s gloves,” he explained.

“He was hooking against his gloves, he was doing it illegally and Khabib said to [referee] Herb Dean that he did it three times. That’s what it was all about. That’s why he fired up.”

On whether Khabib’s moves were pre-planned, Rogan said: “I don’t think it’s calculated. I think he was in the moment and full of passion.

“I think Conor will come out the victim here and Khabib is going to have a very difficult time getting a visa This is incredibly disappointing – I can’t believe we needed more security than we did.

“The fact his friends jumped in the cage and punched McGregor in the face when Conor had no idea that was going to happen, he wasn’t even involved in that.

“The whole thing is extremely unfortunate and a black eye on the sport. We couldn’t hear what he said but Dillon absolutely was insulting Khabib and that’s when he jumped over the fence and attacked him.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when it was happening. When he went over the top and into the crowd, I couldn’t believe it.”

Hours after the rumble in Vegas, McGregor posted an instagram message confirming his plans to fight again in the future.

“I’ll be back” was his message, along with a picture of the UFC superstar in the Octagon.

There are a number of opponents McGregor could face next, with Georges St-Pierre, Nate Diaz, Dustin Poirier all contenders for a fight.

Nurmagomedov could also fight McGregor again after a blockbuster night that broke UFC viewing records.

The Octagon invaders who attacked McGregor were revealed as Zubaira Tukhugov and Islam Makhachev.

Tukhugov is the man McGregor claimed was a traitor of Chechnya for working with Dagestan-native Nurmagomedov.

“A true Chechen would never assist in a Dagestani led attack on another Chechen,” McGregor had written on social media in the build-up to the fight.

“A true Chechen would never take orders from a Dagestani man. This is treason. There is no worse than treason.”

By Sunday afternoon the after effects of the brawl started coming to light.

Khabib’s cousin, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, released a video claiming McGregor had hit him below the eye during the brawl.

“In short, I climbed onto the cage. This Irish b**** hit me,” he said. “But I didn’t hold back either. Bam, boom! – I gave [him] two.”

Abubakar then claimed the woolen hat he was wearing prevented him from landing more blows.

“The papakha prevented [me], there was a papakha in my left hand,” added Abubakar.

On Monday morning Abubakar had another message for Nurmagomedov’s fans.

“As-Salaam-Alaikum! Thank you brothers for your support for everything, the wind of your support blew around octagon, and it charged us,” he wrote on instagram, with a clear bruise under his cheek.

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) move on!”

Welterweight champion Tyrone Woodley, working on BT Sport, explained: “It went into complete pandemonium. Khabib jumped out the octagon. He went after Conor’s team-mate Dillon.

“Then Khabib’s men went after Conor after he was recovering from a loss. It was complete chaos.”

Michael Bisping now thinks Khabib could struggle to get back into America.

“I have never seen anybody make such a mistake in my entire life. Khabib fought brilliantly and did everything perfectly,” he said.

“He finished Conor perfectly. That was it. It was revenge. That’s all he had to do.

“He had dignity and class all week but now he’s ruined it on an epic style. He’s absolutely destroyed his reputation.

“He could lose his lightweight title and a suspension by the commission. He might have his visa revoked. This is ridiculous.

“This is the beautiful thing about our sport. Two guys step into the octagon even if they hate each other, we’ve seen it time and time again.

“Grudge matches where they can’t understand one another but when the fight is done, the dust is settled and they shake hands and it’s over.

“That’s what’s happened this time. Khabib has destroyed his legacy in my opinion.

“I’m a big fan of Khabib but there’s no forgiving what we’ve seen tonight, I’m sorry.

“Conor is going to be seen as the victim. Khabib blew it. The stories, the public perception, will all be on Conor’s side. They’ll say he got jumped and everyone will say they feel sorry for him.

“Ultimately Conor might end up winning this fight.”

White labelled it a ‘dark day’ for the sport while UFC star Tony Ferguson slammed Khabib for his actions.

“It was absolutely unprofessional and uncalled for,” he said.

“We’re trying to clean the sport up and take it towards Olympic level and it was bad part on Khabib.

“He should have taken the win, taken the belt and walked away like a man.

“Then we saw this melee which was embarrassing.

“You have grudge matches in all sports but once you get in the octagon and fight, that’s that. I’m upset and I’m appalled.”

Nurmagomedov demanded his title belt be awarded to him after returning from attempting to attack Danis.

He was heard saying: “Give me this belt, I want this belt. Give me this belt.”

But White wasn’t playing ball and he refused to comply with Khabib’s request.

“What’s going to happen is, and this is what I believe, if I put this belt on you everyone will kick off,” he said.

Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has broken his silence on the brawl, labelling McGregor an amateur.

“I want to congratulate my brother Khabib Nurmagomedov – the undisputed, undefeated pound-for-pound king,” he said. “There was never 2 Kings from beginning, only one king.

“This is not the way we want to celebrate such a dominant performance but when you talk about people’s country, family and religion and intentionally try to kill someone like he said and the cornermen running their mouths after, this is the fight game & s*** happens.

“The fans got an amazing fight and a great show.

“I want apologise to the Nevada athletic commission, the governor of Nevada and I want to thank Las Vegas police department and security for doing such an unbelievable job.

“Now everyone understands who’s the amateur here.”

McGregor is now planning a hometown UFC fight in Dublin after his defeat against Nurmagomedov.

It’s claimed the 30-year-old already has the backing from Dublin City Council.

A spokesperson for the stadium said: “We would welcome the UFC and Conor McGregor back any time.”

McGregor last fought in Ireland was UFC’s show in the 3Arena in 2014.

The UFC star has told his advisors to to sort an Irish return following his loss to Nurmagomedov.

Conor McGregor rematch confirmed on Twitter

A rematch was mooted by UFC pundits when the dust settled after the UFC 229 brawl.

Talk of that has gathered pace after McGregor, taking to Twitter at 10.20am this morning, appeared to confirm that it was on the cards.

He wrote: “Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.”

Earlier, Birtish MMA fighter John Maguire suggested there might be a more cynical motive behind the drama.

“Don’t worry people it will all be forgotten about in a couple of weeks and then there will be a even bigger build-up for a rematch,” he wrote.

Conor McGregor hasn’t pressed charges

After being attacked in the octagon by friends of Khabib, McGregor has opted not to press charges.

Dana White revealed: “I saw one of Conor’s guys yelling at Khabib, Khabib ran and jumped over the octagon, went after him. Two of Khabib’s guys got into the octagon, one guy hit Conor with some shots form behind, and that’s it

“The way that works is Conor is one of the guys who was attacked. Conor refused to press charges. There were three guys from Khabib’s team arrested, and they were released because Conor didn’t want to press charges.”

Khabib has apologised and he hasn’t been paid

Nurmagomedov said: “First of all I want to say sorry to Nevada Athletic Commission and second to Vegas. I know this is not my best side. I’m a human being.

“But I don’t understand how people can talk about how I jump on the cage. He talked about my religion, he talked about my country, he talked about my father.

“He came to Brooklyn and he broke bus, he almost killed a couple of people. What about this s***?”

‘Conor McGregor could have died in Vegas… why Khabib has brought UFC to SHAME’

From Chisanga Malata in Las Vegas

I WASN’T in Brooklyn – when Conor McGregor threw a dolly through a bus window with Khabib Nurmagomedov inside – but I was in Las Vegas.

And what I saw from my front row seat with my own eyes – at just after 10pm out here – was the lowest of the low.

To say the brawl was chaos would be putting it lightly. It was utter carnage.

Not only could the fracas have led to the participants suffering serious injuries, it could have caused casualties among the spectators.

It has ruined an otherwise stellar night for the UFC, who are now in the midst of another huge controversy a mere six months after McGregor’s antics at the UFC 223 media day in Brooklyn.

Now I know what you’re thinking – he’s being overdramatic and fans weren’t at all in danger.

But the lives of some of the fight goers were at stake when multiple brawls kicked off in the crowd.

We have seen it all before. Members of the public killed by one punch. Floored in a late-night town centre brawl.

Quite frankly, we are lucky no-one has died.

Nurmagomedov and McGregor fans, some of whom had been drinking heavily, shockingly traded blows as their heroes were being led out of the arena.

Some of those involved fell down stairs and found themselves fighting off multiple attackers.

There’s always a possibility of crowd violence at combat sports events, a fact security at arenas around the world are more than are aware of.

But even they couldn’t have prepared themselves for what ensued after The Notorious’ claim to be the undisputed lightweight champion was laid to waste in emphatic fashion

The tensions between Team McGregor and Team Nurmagomedov were well documented before the fight, which makes one wonder why extra security wasn’t deployed cageside. Quite simply, there was not enough.

That being said no one could have prepared for a cowardly attack from behind being launched on McGregor, whose future in the sport is once again unknown.

The eyes of fight fans across the world were firmly fixed on the T-Mobile Arena, with many keen to see if McGregor could become the first man to defeat Nurmagomedov and reclaim the lightweight title he was stripped of in April.

Not just fight fans, either. Sports fans had a taste of McGregor in the boxing ring and there was a new breed of UFC converts.

Not now. Sport went out the window the moment Khabib hurdled the octagon. This is not backpage news. This is frontpage stuff.

This incident is, unfortunately, a huge black eye for the UFC and fans of mixed martial arts around the globe.

I would love for it to not overshadow one of the best cards MMA’s premier promotion have held in the last two years.

But it has. UFC has been dragged through the mud. The entire world is talking about the brawl.
