Australia’s aggressive bowling sparked yet another England batting collapse before Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes steadied the ship late in the afternoon session.
Having reached lunch on 76 for two, England quickly lost Joe Denly for 30 after he’d faced a barrage of short bowling from Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.
Rory Burns passed 50 but fell to a superb catch by Cameron Bancroft at short leg soon afterwards.
And England were truly reeling on 136 for five when Peter Siddle removed Jos Buttler for just 12, with Ben Stokes trapped lbw by Nathan Lyon for 13 not long afterwards.
However, the out of touch Bairstow combined with Woakes to put on 63 for the seventh wicket by tea.
