  • Arsenal are monitoring Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana ahead of a summer move
  • The 25-year-old has been sidelined since February due to a doping suspension
  • However, the highly-rated stopper is appealing the verdict to CAS next month
  • Should he succeed, the door could open for a move to Mikel Arteta’s side
  • Arsenal contacted Onana over a transfer in January and could pay just £7m

Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Ajax star Andre Onana but will wait for the outcome of the goalkeeper’s appeal against his 12-month doping ban before making a move this summer.

The Cameroonian stopper, 25, is serving a ban handed to him by UEFA after testing positive for Furosemide, which he claims was prescribed to his wife and that he accidentally consumed.

Onana and Ajax are fighting the ban and the case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in early June, with the outcome expected later that month.

And Goal reports that the length of the ban could be reduced to just eight months, opening the door for a summer move away with Arsenal interested in the Dutch giants’ goalkeeper.

The Gunners’ interest reportedly dates back to January, when transfer chief Edu made contact with Onana’s representatives over a possible move, with the Cameroonian’s contract expiring next summer.

Mikel Arteta has been searching for another goalkeeper amid the shaky form of No 1 Bernd Leno and the underwhelming displays of back up keeper Alex Runarsson.

However. financial constraints served as a stumbling block over a move and the Gunners instead opted for Matt Ryan on a loan deal from Brighton.

Onana’s current suspension prevents him from even training with the Dutch giants, as such the Cameroonian is undergoing private training sessions with a goalkeeper coach at an amateur football club in Amsterdam.

Should Onana’s sentence be reduced to eight months, the 25-year-old would be allowed to train with a club from June and he could return to action two months later.

Arteta and Edu’s admiration of Onana remains intact and Ajax will reportedly accept as little as £12m for the goalkeeper this summer, although Goal reports that the Dutch giants could sell for just £7m given that his contract expires next summer.

The Gunners may face competition for Onana’s signature, however, with clubs from France and Germany also understood to be keeping track of the shot stopper.
